Ambulance Passes Inspection

July 21, 2008

During the day Monday, Ambulance 69 along with all Monroeville EMS units were together at Station 4 being inspected for our licensure "checkup" by EMSI. This year, Ambulance 69 passed with no problems and was back in service rather quick. A lot of hard work went into preparing the ambulance by all but special thanks goes out to EMT/Firefighter Anthony Sage and EMT/Firefighter Michael Simms for the extreme dedication to the project.

Haz-Mat Incident

July 14, 2008

Company 4 was alerted to the area of Alpine Village Drive and William Penn Highway (Rt 22) for an oil slick forming on a local stream. Crews arrived to find what appeared to be gasoline leaking into the stream with a large fish kill. Crews from Rescue 4 attempted to contain the leak but found it too large to handle. Just over 2 hours into the incident, Command requested the Monroeville Haz-Mat response bringing Company 5, Engine 62, Rescue 6, Rescue 1, and Command 32 to the scene while also requesting the Allegheny County Haz-Mat Red Team to assist with investigation and control of the product. It was determined that due to the large amount of gas vapors in the area, several homes nearby had to be evacuated and utilities terminated in the area while crews worked to contain the spill. Company 6 crews assisted with evacuations, manpower, and lighting well into the night. With the assistance of the DEP, Fish Commission, and Allegheny County Emergency Services, the scene was declared under control and units were scaled back to Company 4 just after midnight. The cause of the leak is still under investigation.
