Around
16:30, crews from Companies 5 and 6 were alerted
for a vehicle fire on the Parkway East (I-376) eastbound.
As E-61 was crossing the parkway overpass on Garden
City Drive, they advised communications of a working
vehicle fire. E-51 arrived and confirmed a fully
involved pickup truck on fire and advanced a line
for extinguishment. E-61 arrived shortly after and
backed up E-51's crew with an additional line. Crews
encountered various hazards including burning magnesium
and a ruptured fuel tank. After several dry chemical
extinguishers and a foam application provided by
E-62, crews finally extinguished the fire. Crews
remained on scene for a while longer for clean up.
During
the early afternoon, Company 1 was dispatched to
the Northern Pike Bridge Construction area for a
worker that had taken ill and was possibly unconscious.
Rescue 6 was requested shortly after when it was
reported the male was on scaffolding 15-20 feet
in the air. A-18 arrived and confirmed that a rope
rescue system would be needed to assist with patient
removal. Rescue 1, Rescue 4 (on the run covering
with a medic) and Rescue 6 arrived and rigged a
rope system using a stokes basket and an on-site
crane to lower the patient to the highway below.
The patient was loaded and transported to a local
hospital for treatment.
