Smoke
in the Building
December
16, 2007
Shortly
after 2 PM today, Companies 1, 3, 6, T4 and T5 were
called to the Radisson Hotel on Mall Blvd for a
report of smoke the the pool room. T4 arrived on
scene and investigated finding an initial report
of a possible problem with chemicals but later revised
their report to a possible burned up motor on the
pool pump. Additional crews checked the building
and it was confirmed to be isolated to the pump
due to a power failure in the area. Crews handled
some minor ventilation and returned shortly after.
Just
before 11:00 PM, Communications alerted Companies
3, 1, 6, Truck 4 and Tanker 5 for a reported working
structure fire in the alley behind Roberts St and
Valley St. C-30 (Chief Hyzy) arrived on scene to
report a vacant house with heavy fire conditions.
Quint 1 and Engine 31 arrived around the same time
establishing a water supply and began to make entry
on the fire. Engine 62 arrived and was ordered to
establish a secondary water supply, Truck 4 set
up infront of the structure, and Tanker 5 along
with E51 stood by for extra water supply. Shortly
after arrival, Command determined to go to a defensive
operation due to the condition of the structure.
Crews from all companies made an aggressive exterior
attack to push the fire back allowing crews to regain
entry inside, finish with extinguishment and overhaul.
Most crews wrapped up shortly after 1 AM while Company
3 remained on scene while investigators from Monroeville
Police Department and Allegheny County Fire Marshall
Office worked the scene.
Tonight,
all 5 Monroeville companies came together to purchase
toys for KISS 96.1 FM Freak Show's 4th annual Stuff
A Bus toy drive to benefit the Marines
Toys for Tots Foundation. Around 17:00, everyone
met at Toys R Us on Rt 22 to buy the toys. With
$500 donated from each Company and armed with carts,
the guys loaded up the squads with hundreds of toys
and headed for the buses. Once out at the KISS "compound",
around 40 enthusiastic and frozen volunteers loaded
the toys on the bus, nearly entirely filling the
whole thing. The Monroeville Fire Department is
proud to participate in this worthy cause and hope
our small donation brings many smiles to those children
in need. We look forward to next year when we hopefully
will make it two buses.
Approximately
1:15 today, Company 6 was called to the intersection
of Garden City Drive and Old William Penn Highway
for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries.
M-69 arrived on scene to find 2 vehicles, one initially
reported to be into a structure. With this report,
C-61 (Asst. Chief Ramsey) requested an additional
Engine respond bringing E-51 and M-58 to the scene.
Further investigation found very minor damage to
the building and 3 individuals injured. Command
then summoned an additional med unit bringing A-19
to the scene. With no extrication needed, all 3
patients were attended to and transported to Pittsburgh
trauma centers while R-6 and E-51 assisted with
lighting and debris mitigation. Crews cleared in
about 1 hour.

Chimney
Fire
December
4 , 2007
Shortly
after 19:00 tonight, Companies 5, 6, 4 and Command
32 were alerted to the area of McKenzie DR and Lorraine
DR for a reported possible fire on the roof of a
residence. E-51, T-5, and Tanker 5 arrived shortly
after dispatch reporting fire showing from a fireplace
chimney at a residence in the 4400 Blk of McKenzie.
Crews went to the roof and interior finding the
fire was contained to the chimney itself with no
extension into the residence. Crews used chimney
flares and foam cans to extinguish the fire. Shortly
after, command held Companies 5, 6, and T4 while
ventilation occurred. Units returned to service
just under 1 hour.
